Deceived

  • Goldie Hawn delivers a critically acclaimed performance as Adrienne Saunders, someone whose perfect life as a wife, mother, and career woman disintegrates into a confusing world of betrayal and deception. After her husband (John Heard -- HOME ALONE, AWAKENINGS) apparently dies in a mysterious auto accident, Adrienne discovers a series of shocking truths about him -- and chilling evidence of a dead
It's the craziest mix-up ever! Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell dazzle the screen in this buoyant and screwball comedy of memory-making and memory-faking. One of Hollywood's most dynamic screen pairs, Hawn and Russell make the most of every hilarious situation in this delightful riches-to-rags romance that's perfect entertainment for anyone who appreciates a great practical joke. Hawn is Joanna Stayton, the pampered wife of a pretentious, yacht-owning socialite. When their boat gets stuck for repairs! , Joanna employs carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell) to improve her closet space. But when Dean asks to be paid, he's blatantly turned down by the "nothing is ever good enough for me" Joanna. So when Joanna falls overboard and gets a bad case of amnesia, Dean takes advantage of the situation and, in a stroke of retributive genius, tells her that she's his wife and the mother of hisfour unruly children!Real-life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn star in this enjoyable 1987 comedy by Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) about an imperious heiress (Hawn) who loses her memory after a boating accident and is identified as the wife of a handyman (Russell). Russell's character brings her "home" to his messy house and unruly kids, and the laughs follow as the aristocratic Hawn tries fitting in. Marshall delivers the comic goods, the leads are entertaining (Russell needs to do more comedy), and the supporting cast is made up of happily familiar faces, including Roddy McDowall, Edward! Herrmann, and Marshall favorite Hector Elizondo in an unbille! d bit. < I>--Tom Keogh DEATH BECOMES HER - DVD MovieIf Robert Zemeckis's mega-hit Forrest Gump was too sweet for your taste, you may enjoy the undiluted bitterness of his previous movie, a cynical black comedy that was ahead of its time. Death Becomes Her, an outlandish parable about America's obsession with youth and vanity, exposes the corrosive side of Zemeckis's comic sensibility, the sort of scathing satirical edge he gleefully flourished in his overlooked 1980 Used Cars, which has developed a cult following. Meryl Streep has a ball as the deliciously vicious Madeline Ashton, a flamboyantly mannered actress who makes Bette Davis's formidable Margo Channing in All About Eve look like a wallflower. Goldie Hawn is also in razor-sharp comedic form as Madeline's long-time "best friend," Helen. Sensing a bargain she just can't resist, Madeline steals Helen's meek, plastic-surgeon husband Ernest (Bruce Willis) for her own convenience, and the two women b! ecome sworn enemies. But the real complications arise when the two are introduced to a secret anti-aging formula by a mysterious and exotic woman (Isabella Rossellini, delightfully ridiculous) that not only smoothes away wrinkles but actually guarantees immortality. As their undying bodies are twisted and mutilated by violent attacks on each other, both women grow increasingly dependent on Ernest for cosmetic repair. The pioneering digital effects inflicted on Streep and Hawn are as grotesque as they are imaginative and hilarious. Like James Cameron (The Abyss, Titanic), Zemeckis loves a technical challenge, and the new visual tools developed for this movie made his later work (in Forrest Gump and Contact) possible. --Jim EmersonAs the daughter of a legendary grid iron star, a young woman's greatest desire is to coach a team of her own. But when the chauvinistic powers-that-be assign her to an inner-city ghetto school, the spirited female ! has her work cut out for her.Goldie Hawn plays a physical educ! ation te acher who gets a chance to coach an inner-city high school football team. If that sounds contrived, it is, but in the hands of director Michael Ritchie (Smile), the jokes all fire, and there's plenty of comedy teased out in details. (The cheerleading squad has some funny moments just belting out their morale-boosting chants.) The supporting cast has a couple of significant up-and-comers: Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. --Tom Keogh The New York Times bestselling memoir from one of the world's best-loved actresses

In this candid, insightful, and\ unconventional memoir, Goldie Hawn invites us to join her in an inspirational look back at the people, places, and events that have touched her. It is the spiritual journey of a heart in search of enlightenment.

With her trademark effervescence, Goldie delivers a personal look at private and powerful events that carried her through life: her father's spontaneity; her mother's cour! age; and the joy of being a daughter, a sister, a parent, and a lover. She writes about her childhood dreams of becoming a ballerina. She takes us on a tour of her go-go years in 1960s New York City, the phenomenon of TV's Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, her Oscar-winning debut in Cactus Flower and Hollywood stardom.

She writes intimately about the challenges of love, anger and fear, and the importance of compassion and integrity. She speaks openly about her family, her partner Kurt Russell, her children, her faith, her curiosity for that which she doesn't yet know, and her thirst for knowledge. Most of all, it is a trip back through a life well lived by a woman well loved.Goldie Hawn delivers a critically acclaimed performance as Adrienne Saunders, someone whose perfect life as a wife, mother, and career woman disintegrates into a confusing world of betrayal and deception. After her husband (John Heard -- HOME ALONE, AWAKENINGS) apparently dies in a myste! rious auto accident, Adrienne discovers a series of shocking t! ruths ab out him -- and chilling evidence of a deadly scheme that threatens her life! From the first startling plot twist to the heart-stopping climax, DECEIVED is a riveting suspense-filled thriller that will entertain you in the spirit of Hitchcock's best!

Hénoch Jédésias

  • Gothic American novel
  • Creole Louisiana
Higher Powers is the purest of fantasy writings and has almost every mythical creature in it, from the mighty Typhon to the smallest of Sprites and Fairies. This clash of Greek mythology, Norse mythology, Christianity and Astrology ranges over five-hundred years on a distant planet called Sockly. The romantic drive keeps the story going through sword duels, plagues, full scale battles, merging of armies, and more. With familiar villains like Ares and the Ragnarok, and not so well known villains named Maleficent and Dionysia, our heroes engage death itself to save their homes, their families and their beloved.« Du banc où M. Jédésias m'avait prié de m'asseoir, je considérai avec curiosité sa figure d'avare.

From the dust jacket flap: "There was a soft sound from behind us.... The wereleopards were climbing off the bed, gliding towards us on human feet but moving as if there were muscles in their legs and hips and torsos that didn't exist in mine." Relax, the wereleopards are good guys. They're just being affectionate. In the first two collections of Anita Blake novels, readers met every kind of furred, fanged and tough-to-kill critter under the Moon. Now, in two ! brand new books, Anita is back, and she's taking on the Vampire High Council and a whole range of enemies new and old ... including her libido. So no matter which leopard pard, wolf pack or vampire call (that's the word for a bunch of vampires) you're a member of, walk softly around this woman. Her Browning 9mm automatic is handy. And her silver knives are as sharp as Laurell K. Hamilton's writing. And that cuts to the heart of dark adventure every time. The creepiest thing about Casper Meets Wendy is the title characters' romance--bashful, cutie pie Casper shouldn't be prone to weaknesses of the flesh (he is, after all, a ghost). And he's entirely too childlike to take up with a witch even of Wendy's decidedly non-wicked order. Still, sparks fly in this madcap jumble of a film, and so do the sort of zippy one-liners and presto-type magic tricks that'll keep kids from 6 to 12 spellbound. The plot is paper-thin: head honcho warlock Desmond Spellman (George Hamilton) is! obsessed with offing Wendy (Hilary Duff) after an oracle proc! laims he r powers to be on the upswing. He sends two goons to capture her at the Sunny Brite resort, where she and her haggish aunts (Teri Garr, Cathy Moriarty, and Shelley Duvall) are in hiding and where Casper and his trouble-making uncles are vacationing and causing random calamities. While Wendy and Casper hit it off, their more traditional-minded relations show off and swap insults. Nevertheless, the ghosts harbor a hush-hush respect the witches' unruliness, and it rears its head at just the right moment--when Wendy's about to be vaporized in Spellman's swirling vortex of doom. Were it not mildly fun to watch the trio of well-established older actresses suit up in witch costumes and crack wise, adults would find this film bordering on the unbearable. Kids, on the other hand, will want to set the record straight on its spook-tacularness. --Tammy La GorceSki School 2 Poster (11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm) (1995) Style A reproduction poster print

TO! P RATED HALLMARK CHANNEL MOVIE!From handshakes and toasts to chant and genuflection, ritual pervades our social interactions and religious practices. Still, few of us could identify all of our daily and festal ritual behaviors, much less explain them to an outsider. Similarly, because of the variety of activities that qualify as ritual and their many contradictory yet, in many ways, equally legitimate interpretations, ritual seems to elude any systematic historical and comparative scrutiny. In this book, Catherine Bell offers a practical introduction to ritual practice and its study; she surveys the most influential theories of religion and ritual, the major categories of ritual activity, and the key debates that have shaped our understanding of ritualism. Bell refuses to nail down ritual with any one definition or understanding. Instead, her purpose is to reveal how definitions emerge and evolve and to help us become more familiar with the interplay of tradition, exigency,! and self- expression that goes into constructing this complex! social medium. When 911 operator Michael Summer (Catherine Bell, Army Wives) returns to work after suffering a personal tragedy, she receives a mysterious call from a frightened child begging for help. She soon begins having visions of a young girl believed to have been a drowning victim. The visions lead Michael to the town of Starlight, Pennsylvania, where she uncovers the story of a girl who went missing years before. Though the girl was written off as a drowning victim, Michael believes she was kidnapped. Threatening her own health and sanity, Michael launches her own investigation, uncovering a startling secret that shatters everything she knows to be true about herself.

Joan of Arcadia - The First Season

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • Box set; Color; DVD; Widescreen; NTSC

We'd all love to stop eating
the poisonous parts of our wildness.

Ever wondered what it's like to be a celebrated Hollywood actor from the age of eleven? With insightful, no BS, cards-on-the-table poetry that is quite serious yet has fun with metaphor, imagery, and language itself, author Amber Tamblyn gives readers a backstage pass to the show inside her mind. Whether she's describing real life info-gathering for a new prime time TV drama ("Role Research") or addressing the crossroads of public perception and private life ("Fell Off"), Amber Tamblyn reveals questions, answers, and more in Bang Ditto, wielding metaphors mercilessly in a wry and talented voice.

“Tamblyn’s witty personal accounts and surprisingly lyrical observations go way above the sc! ripted bullsh*t spouted by most of her peers.Ӊ€"The Onion A.V. Club

“Punchy, spiky, and flush with a young writer's love of language, the collection often deglamourizes the acting business. A great find...Ӊ€"Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

Amber Tamblyn is an Emmy and Golden Globe Awardâ€"nominated actor and poet. She came to fame on the soap opera General Hospital followed by starring roles on the television series Joan of Arcadia and The Unusuals. She has branched out into film roles, appearing in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and many other films. Winner of a Borders Choice Award for Breakout Writing, the author currently resides in New York.

In a world bookended by extreme drama and comic insanity, NYPD Detective Casey Shraeger (Amber Tamblyn) moves from Vice to Homicide to investigate the murder of a fellow cop. Considered by her new boss, Sergeant Harvey Brown (! Terry Kinney), to be unimpeachable because of her family’s w! ealth †" a fact she carefully keeps hidden â€" Casey quickly learns that she isn’t the only cop with a secret. Thrust into a world that’s already rife with eccentrics and tainted by corruption, Casey cautiously navigates Homicide’s treacherous waters as she joins the victim’s partner, Detective Jason Walsh (Jeremy Renner), in unraveling the knot of conflicting clues that they hope will lead them to the killer and ultimately reveal the truth behind the dead cop’s past.

Although Amber Tamblyn is best known as the star of the smash hit Joan of Arcadia, she is a serious poet, mentored by Jack Hirshman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and other San Francisco Beat poets. She has self-published two chapbooks, and her poems have appeared in books published by City Lights. Here is her first collection of poems specifically for ! teens. The poems relate to teen issues such as love and relati! onships, and all are influenced by Amber's feminist sensibility. An introduction by Jack Hirshman puts her poetry in a literary context, and her personal introduction gives insight into her poems and helps readers access them. Amber's celebrity will help bring the value of poetry to a new, wider audience. After patriarch Will gets a job as the chief of police, the Girardi family moves to the small town of Arcadia from the big city. Middle child Joan isn't happy, and her family, consisting of science nerd Luke, paralyzed former jock Kevin, and their perpetually flustered mother Helen, isn't helping. Joan finds herself talking to God, in the form of random people who give her assignments to help the people around her. Joan keeps following God's assignments, never sure if she's really speaking to him, or just going crazy!Once in awhile a show comes along that breaks the mold. Most such programs fail, but Joan of Arcadia set out to do something new, beat the odds, and found an a! udience. Created by Barbara Hall (Judging Amy), it̢۪s a unique hybrid of My So-Called Life, The Commish, and--well, something different. Unlike CBS predecessor Touched by an Angel, faith creates more questions than answers (and God even has a sense of humor).

Joan (Amber Tamblyn) is an ordinary 16-year-old. Father Will (Joe Mantegna) is the local Arcadia police chief, mother Helen (Mary Steenburgen) is a teacher/administrator, younger brother Luke (Michael Welch) is a fellow student, and older brother Kevin (Jason Ritter, son of John Ritter) is a high school graduate who was paralyzed the year before. He used to be popular and athletic. Now he watches TV and builds models. In the pilot, God speaks to Joan for the first time, as a cute boy, and asks her to get a job. Once she's convinced He's really God, she does. Her action inspires Kevin to get one, too, and his process of rejoining the world begins.

As in Joan Osborne̢۪s the! me song, "One of Us" (featured on two episodes), God will cont! inue to appear to Joan in a variety of guises--even as a dog walker who looks like Russ Tamblyn (Amber's father). He̢۪ll often ask her to do things that make her uncomfortable, but she'll always learn from the experience and some good will always come from it. Unfortunately, she isn't able to talk to anyone about this or they'd think she was crazy, not even friends Grace (Becky Hahlstrom) or Adam (Christopher Marquette). By the season finale, faith will be replaced by doubt, setting the scene for the second season, in which Joan̢۪s faith will be restored. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
